Melissa Philpott MSW, RSW

Hi, I’m Mel! I’m a registered social worker and psychotherapist with two decades of experience supporting people through some of the hardest, most defining moments of their lives. More than credentials, I believe therapy is a space for truth-telling, healing, humour, and a deep reconnection to self.

My Approach
My clients are often thoughtful, capable people who’ve given so much to others that they’ve lost track of themselves. Many come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or like something just isn’t working anymore, even if everything looks fine on the outside. If that sounds like you, you’re not alone. And you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself anymore.
I work with people from all walks of life, but certain themes show up again and again, patterns you might recognize in yourself:

You’ve been the emotional glue for everyone at work, at home, in your relationships. You’ve ignored your needs for so long that you’re not even sure what they are anymore. You might look “fine” to others, but inside you’re stretched thin, resentful, and tired of performing. Therapy gives you a space to ask for more.

You’re figuring out who you are while the world tells you to have it all together. Maybe you're juggling school, work, family expectations, and your identity, and wondering if you’re falling behind. I offer a space to slow down, get curious, and start making choices that feel like you.

You’ve done everything “right” career, family, responsibilities and still feel disconnected. Maybe your relationship is strained, or you don’t know who to talk to about the pressure and grief building inside. You don’t have to keep holding it all alone.

You’ve survived what no one saw. Maybe you’ve spent years questioning whether it was even abuse. You might feel ashamed, hyper-independent, or like you have to minimize it just to get through the day. You don’t need to justify your pain here. I believe you and we can work from that truth.
I draw from a wide range of training and lived experience: trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, attachment-focused, and evidence-based modalities like IFS, ACT, DBT, Interpersonal Therapy, and Narrative approaches. I’ve worked in colleges and universities, with survivors of sexual and intimate violence, and with individuals navigating eating disorders, identity transitions, and systemic oppression.

My lens is always contextual, I don’t believe your mental health exists in a vacuum. The systems you live in, the stories you’ve carried, the ways you’ve learned to survive, they all matter.

Many of my clients are new to therapy or have had past experiences that didn’t feel like a good fit. I get that it can be awkward or scary to open up to a stranger, especially if you’ve been let down before. I’ll meet you with warmth, honesty, and respect for wherever you’re starting from.
Whether you're here to unpack trauma, explore a transition, or just want to feel more like yourself again, I’m here when you’re ready.
